Russian soprano Anna Netrebko sang the title role in the premiere of “Aida” for the 100th anniversary of the “Arena di Verona”

The 100th anniversary season of the Arena di Verona was opened by the premiere of Giuseppe Verdi’s opera Aida. The main part in it was performed by the Russian prima Anna Netrebko, the part of Radames was performed by her husband, tenor Yusif Eyvazov.

Other Russian opera singers and singers also took part in the performance. Among them are the performers of the Mariinsky and Bolshoi Theaters Olesya Petrova, Alexander Vinogradov and Elena Stikhina.

The first performance at the Arena di Verona took place in August 1913. It was also Aida, as that year marked the 100th anniversary of the birth of Giuseppe Verdi. The guests of the premiere were composer Giacomo Puccini, as well as writers Maxim Gorky and Franz Kafka.

Since then, the opera has been performed regularly in the amphitheater. But one-time performances have been held there before. In 1822, a concert was held in the Arena di Verona in honor of the Congress of the Holy Alliance. Then the conductor in the presence of high-ranking guests, among whom was the Russian Emperor Alexander I, was Gioacchino Rossini. And after 30 years, the public was presented with “Love Potion” and “The Barber of Seville”.
