Chess player Kirill Alekseenko changed his Russian sports citizenship. Now he will compete under the flag of Austria. This was reported on the website of the International Chess Federation (FIDE).

The organization confirmed the transfer on July 7. And from the next day, the grandmaster got the right to play for the new team.

26-year-old Kirill Alekseenko was born in Vyborg, played for the St. Petersburg “Bronze Horseman”. As part of the team, he twice became the champion of Russia.

The chess player is ranked 63rd in the FIDE rating. He participated in the 2020-2021 Candidates Tournament and finished seventh out of eight with 5.5 points in 14 games.

Earlier, MK in St. Petersburg wrote that the decision to change sports citizenship was made by St. Petersburg short track skater Sofya Prosvirnova.
