Demand for AI applications supported TSMC’s quarterly sales – Kommersant

In the second quarter, sales of the world’s largest semiconductor manufacturer Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company (TSMC) reached $15.3 billion, as calculated by the agency. Bloomberg (TSMC itself publishes reports for each individual month). This is 10% lower than a year earlier for the same period, but higher than analysts’ forecasts.

As follows from reporting TSMC, in June its sales amounted to $4.98 billion. From the beginning of the year to June inclusive, the company’s sales exceeded $31 billion, which is 3.5% less than in the same period in 2022.

As noted by Bloomberg, the sharp increase in demand for artificial intelligence (AI) applications, which require exactly the kind of semiconductors that TSMC makes, was the reason for the somewhat strengthening quarterly sales. The Taiwanese company is the main semiconductor manufacturer for Nvidia’s AI accelerators, which are considered the best for training large data models like those used in ChatGPT. Shares of TSMC on the Taiwan exchange have risen by 25% since the beginning of the year.
